Abstract: Aim of this work is to propose a novel Multi Agent System (MAS) for clinical risk management. The kernel of this system combines two elements: the widely adopted RFID technology and a new kind of intelligent agent that we call “sleeping agent”. Starting from a thorough analysis of existent barcode-enhanced information systems in clinical practice, a re-engineered RFID-enhanced model that considers the patient at the centre of the medical care is presented. This latter model does not suffice to handle the complexity of the hospital environment and is then completed with the adoption of agent technology employing the sleeping agent. This agent stays silent in the RFID received by patients when they come into health centres until it is awakened by some external triggers to feed the information system process asynchronously. This analysis deals with the advantages and the improvements that would be gained in clinical risk management by using the proposed technology.
