Abstract: The proposed work refers to SlimPort Project, funded by the VII Framework Program for Research and Sustainable Development. We present a flexible and densely distributed monitoring system, designed to monitor air quality in the interest area. Our goal is overcome the limits of monitoring stations of air pollutants. In fact, they are characterized by regular sessions, highly accurate sensors, but also very expensive and bulky. The proposed device is based on low cost electrochemical gas sensors and light scattering particle sensor: it is able to make continuous measurements of the target pollutants. The transponder is composed of an acquisition module, comprising the sensors and the signal conditioning circuitry, and a processing module that samples the signals coming from sensors, compresses and storages data in a local buffer and shares data with a central server. Sensors were chosen by referring to Air Quality Index, defined by the U.S. EPA, which includes the following parameters: O3, CO, SO2, NO2, PM10 and PM2.5. Here, we report an application of monitoring system in Port Area of Taranto, but this technology can be applied to several industrial and domestic fields, for example, gas leak detectors in factories, fires and toxic gas detectors, etc.
